Miss Garey’s Math

Goals for Students:

  1. To be able to clearly explain their mathematical thinking in speaking and writing.
  2. To be able to identify when an answer or part of a problem doesn’t make reasonable sense.
  3. To be fluent in multiplication/division facts.

How Students Are Graded:

  • Checks for Understanding 15%
    • In-class quizzes taken approx. 3 times a week
  • Homework Completion 5%
    • Homework is considered practice and therefore will be graded on whether or not the assignment is completed.  Students will be able to correct homework as we go over the assignments in class.  They are expected to keep the corrected homework as a study tool for assessments.
  • Written Responses 20%
    • Students will be communicating properly in Math this year.  It is important that they understand how to properly write about a given topic mathematically.
  • Math Facts 20%
    • Multiplication facts are the base of every Math class from here on out.  Students will be quizzed and held responsible for memorizing both their multiplication and division facts through 12.
  • Topic Assessments 40%
    • After all the information within a topic is taught, an assessment will be given.  Students should utilize all their study materials to prepare for these assessments.

Study Materials:

  1. Computation Book-notes taken everyday in class with examples of every type of problem the student will encounter within a given topic.
  2. The textbook!  Students should bring this textbook home every night to prepare for the next day in class.  A copy of the textbook can also be found online.
